In the summer of 2021, a modest dream took shape on the dusty roads of rural Odisha. What if one small auto rickshaw could transform how families received clean drinking water — every single day? That’s how the Auto Rickshaw Project began — a partnership between Spring Health and Transform Poverty Global’s Clean Water Initiative, fully funded at $3,500 in July 2021.

The goal was simple but powerful: to make water delivery more reliable, affordable, and independent — while empowering local entrepreneurs in the process.

The Struggle Before the Solution

For years, Spring Health relied on hired autos to distribute water from kiosks to households. But these third-party arrangements often came with last-minute cancellations, irregular timings, and increasing costs. Each delay meant families waiting longer for safe water — and each missed trip strained the trust that Spring Health had worked so hard to build. The team knew something had to change.

The Turning Point

Then came the turning point. With the Auto Rickshaw Project, Spring Health purchased a second-hand auto and handed the keys to one of its own delivery executives. That one decision sparked a chain of positive change.

The results were immediate — and inspiring.

  • Deliveries became timely and dependable, no longer dependent on external drivers.
  • The company saved ₹1,00,000 annually across three villages.
  • During idle hours, the same vehicle supported other operational needs — at no additional cost.

What began as a single pilot became a living example of what ownership and efficiency can achieve when paired with purpose.

More Than a Vehicle — A Movement

But the project isn’t just about logistics. It’s about dignity, independence, and progress.

Each auto empowers rural entrepreneurs to take charge of water distribution — creating steady income while serving their own communities. The vision extends beyond mobility: to one day transition to solar-powered rickshaws, cutting carbon emissions and aligning with Gold Standard climate certifications.

In the words of one field manager,

“It’s not just about delivering water anymore. It’s about delivering reliability, pride, and opportunity — one village at a time.”

The Road Ahead

The success of the pilot phase has opened the road to scale. Plans are now underway to replicate the model across new clusters of villages — each with its own driver, its own route, and its own story of transformation.

Every auto on the road represents more than movement — it represents hope on wheels.
